What Can the Cosmic Microwave Background Tell Us about the Outer Solar System?
نویسندگان
چکیده
We discuss two new observational techniques that use observations of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) to place constraints on the mass, distance, and size distribution of small objects in the Kuiper Belt and inner Oort Cloud, collectively known as trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs). The first new technique considers the spectral distortion of the isotropic, ormonopole, CMBbyTNOs that have been heated by solar radiation to temperatures above that of the CMB. We apply this technique to the spectral measurements of the CMB by the Far Infrared Absolute Spectrophotometer on the Cosmic Background Explorer. The second technique utilizes the change in amplitude of the TNO signal due to the orbital motion of the observer to separate the TNO signal from the invariant extragalactic CMB and construct a map of the mass distribution in the outer solar system. We estimate the ability of future CMB experiments to create such a map. متن کاملWhat do we really know about dark energy?
In this paper, we discuss what we truly know about dark energy. I shall argue that, to date, our single indication for the existence of dark energy comes from distance measurements and their relation to redshift. Supernovae, cosmic microwave background anisotropies and observations of baryon acoustic oscillations simply tell us that the observed distance to a given redshift z is larger than the...
متن کاملMeasurements of The CMB : Current Status and Future Prospects
The study of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) is a rapidly maturing field. In remarkable advances in the past two years, experiments have begun to probe the detailed structure of the CMB angular spectrum thereby providing insight into the contents of the universe. We briefly review the BOOMERanG and DASI results with an emphasis on what the data tell us with only minimal cosmological assum...
متن کاملDetermining the motion of the solar system relative to the cosmic microwave background using type Ia supernovae
We estimate the solar system motion relative to the cosmic microwave background using type Ia supernovae (SNe) measurements. We take into account the correlations in the error bars of the SNe measurements arising from correlated peculiar velocities. Without accounting for correlations in the peculiar velocities, the SNe data we use appear to detect the peculiar velocity of the solar system at a...
متن کاملConstraining Fundamental Physics with the Cosmic Microwave Background
The temperature anisotropies and polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation provide a window back to the physics of the early universe. They encode the nature of the initial fluctuations and so can reveal much about the physical mechanism that led to their generation. In this contribution we review what we have learnt so far about early-universe physics from CMB observation...
